what is the chance of a light car safely rounding an unbanked curved on an icy road as compared to that of a heavy car: worse, the same or better? explain . assumed that both cars have the same speed and are equipped with identical tires.
It all depends on what speed they are doing. If they are travelling at the same speed, with the same tyres along the same curve, then the lighter car would stand a much better chance of getting around it.
Basically, as you turn, there is a centrifugation force pushing you outwards (which is why motorcyclists lean into bends) and the larger car will have greater momentum and thus be thrown out more. The heavier car will have better grip, but at higher speeds this will be over come by the increased bulk and therefore it will definitely be thrown out with more force and be less likely to make the turn.
