What is the difference between an engine and a motor?
And why do we have an electric motor but a petrol engine?
I suspect an engine is always the motive power for a machine, but a motor is an independent device. What do you think?
EDIT: I am doubtful about the Electric Motor and the Combustion Engine explanation.
The motor mower and the motor car both words of some vintage, suggest that never has been common usage.
And Wikipedia proposes exactly the opposite:
“The term ‘motor’ was originally used to distinguish the new internal combustion engine -powered vehicles from earlier vehicles…”
A motor is a two piece electromechanical device that converts the motion of current around a magnet into rotation. This is circular motion.
An engine is primarily used for giving linear motion – it is a combination of a motor (in case of electric engines) or a suction-injection-ignition-exhaustion system that converts energy into the motion of a piston, that can be connected to the wheel of a car to take it forward.
Basic difference – the engine creates forward and backward movement of a piston. The motor creates rotatory motion.
