The Dawes Duchess – A Great Womens Hybrid Bike
If you are looking for a comfortable, well-made quality commuter bike with stylish retro looks, you would find the Dawes Duchess womens hybrid hard to beat.
Retro in looks it may be, but retro in technology it most certainly is not – the fundamental design and outfitting are those of a modern bike.
When you read what people who have bought the Duchess are most pleased with, you see it’s comfort, good looks and quality that appeal the most. When you look at how the bike is put together, you can see how Dawes have managed to achieve this.
The bike is built around Dawes’ own steel frame, available in two sizes, 17” and 19” and a choice of plum or red & white colourways. The steel frame results in a very comfortable ride and has the additional benefit of being extremely hard-wearing. The fork is also steel, making for an almost indestructible package.
However, a steel bike is going to be somewhat heavier than say an aluminium one. This is not a light bicycle – it weighs a tad over 16kg. But for normal riding you are unlikely to think this is an issue.
The design of the gears is chosen to mitigate this to an extent. A Shimano thumb-shifter selects between 7 gears and the ratios are chosen to be low enough for tackling hills with ease.
The 26″ wheels help with this as well. They are fitted with 1 3/8″ tyres to make for a softer ride, and will be perfect for the occasional foray over the grass and gravel. The Dawes Heritage leather-look saddle is one of the most comfortable you can get.
The alloy v-brakes are pretty good quality and will give you plenty of stopping power.
Other fittings maximise the practicality of the Dawes Duchess. Mudguards and a really good chainguard will keep the mud and grime off you and flat pedals mean that you do not need special shoes.
The wicker-look basket will hold a good amount of whatever it is you have to carry along and is supported by a strut to take the weight.
Plenty of owners compliment the bike on its looks. We think it’s pretty chic, and the colours good too.
You can get the Dawes Duchess for around the £280 mark. At this sort of money, we think that a bike of this quality is worthy of serious consideration by anyone looking for a super-practical but stylish bike. Whether it’s for commuting or fun (or both), the Dawes Duchess should fit the bill.
