if i lost fluid adjusting my MTB disc brakes do i need to bleed them?
just got my first bike with disc brakes.(Avid Juicy 3′s) during assembly i first had trouble getting the calipers to open so i could insert the rotor then after gettting it in there was drag. the instruction manual sucks and when i was attempting to adjust the brakes some fluid leaked out(normal?) it wasnt much maybe a teaspoon over a few attempts at adjustment. now the brakes do not have much power. i have never worked with disc brakes before but have worked on many MT bikes. so to sum it all up did i leak to much fluid and now need to bleed?
You have a massive amount of air in the line and they DO NEED TO BE BLEED! The only way is to do it the right way and that means you need an Avid juicy bleed kit, no other will work and if you dont use the correct fluid you will void the warranty and damage the seals in the handle. You should have never needed to “get the calipers open” as you put it in the first place. These should have had a spacer between them if the wheel was off the bike and if you pulled the bike out of a box to build it then the spacer either fell off or out in shipping or it was not included when packed. You did not need to let fluid out of the brake line to get the pads apart, that was your mistake. Since it is obvious that you dont know how to bleed Juicy brakes then I strongly suggest that you take the bike to a shop that does- not for a first timer! I use Juicy Ultimate and Juicy 7 brakes and Shimano XT hydraulic and have worked on them for several years now and never have I had to open a line to get pads apart!
