Mountain biking or road cycling?
I am interested in mountain biking and road cycling. Which one should I try first? What I mean is, is the transition from MTB to road easier than the other way around?
This is going to depend on what appeals more to you. Many places rent out mountain bikes, so it would be easy for you to give it a try without too big an outlay of cash. Road bikes are harder to find for rent. As for me, I do both depending on the season. When it is warm out, you will find me on the road, I find it much too hot at low speed in the woods when temperatures are high. During the cooler months, autumn and winter, mountain biking is more appealing to me. It can be done comfortably in weather well below freezing when wind chill would make road riding uncomfortable. As for technique, there are specifics to both types of riding. Mountain biking helps develop bike handling skills and balance, road riding is better for overall conditioning and learning to ride in close formation with other riders, as well as teaching how to ride safely with cars around. All things being equal, I prefer road riding, I can just open the door, throw my leg over my bike, and set off, while for mountain biking I have to load my bike into the car and drive to the trailhead, My road bikes are also more useful for transportation. If I could only have one bike, I might choose a cyclocross bike for road or trail riding
