Review Of The Ariel Range Of Womens Hybrid Bikes From Specialized
The Specialized Ariel range concentrates fairly and squarely on those who like to get away from the tarmac as often as they can. Featuring front suspension forks and fatter tyres, these are bikes which will go down well with those who like to get away off the beaten track.
However, as many satisfied Ariel owners have reported, these bikes are equally happy on the morning commute to work or college. They will absorb all the vibration and shocks that you have to suffer nowadays, making modern road travel a pleasure.
Every Ariel is built onto the same Premium aluminium frame. The swan-neck curve of the top tube is particularly distinctive. The manufacturers have obviously paid attention to practicality, as the frame will take racks and mudgurads as well as a kickstand.
Suspension forks also feature on all the models. All are by Suntour and are chosen from increasingly high-spec versions as you go up the Ariel range. The two top models, the Sport Disc and Comp Disc have lockout forks to increase their rideability on the road.
As far as brakes are concerned, apart from the V-brakes on the entry-level Ariel, the range carries discs – mechanical, or hydraulic on the top model. Hydraulic operation can be useful in applying the braking power of a Disc Brake in a smooth controlled way. Discs have the obvious advantage that the brake surfaces are kept drier and cleaner, improving performance and reducing damage.
The triple chainrings give you a wide choice of gear ratios, making tackling hills easy. The number of gears increases from 21 to 27 through the range.
The 700 mm wheels help greatly with performance on the road. Rolling resistance is kept low by the semi-slick tyres, which at the same time have enough tread on the side to handle expeditions along the towpath.
Riser handlebars make for a very comfortable riding position, comfort further enhanced by the women specific Riva MTB saddle.
So the Specialized Ariel range gives you quite a lot of options. All obviously conform to the same design philosophy – fast commuter bikes, but being equally at home spending more time off the beaten track than average.
You will not be disappointed with the basic Ariel. But if you have the money, what’s on offer from the upper parts of the range are well worth looking at. When you get to the top of the range, the Comp Disc model has few rivals.
