The Pashley Poppy Womens City Bike
The Pashley Poppy, a Great Womens Comfort Bike
The reaction to this bike is incredible. There is no doubt that the Pashley Poppy demands attention wherever it goes – there certainly seems to be no lack of praise for this great bike. How have Pashley managed to pull it off?
Pashley have been making hand-built bikes in Stratford-on-Avon since 1926. Classic bikes, redesigned for the modern rider is what they specialise in. But can their bikes stand up the scrutiny of the modern cyclist?
Emphatically yes, in our opinion. There is a great deal of substance behind the style, and the Poppy is a prime example.
The Poppy is built around a steel frame, and is available in three sizes. Obviously, there is a weight penalty to pay for having a steel frame, but there is no real substitute for steel as far as durability and robustness is concerned – and after all, the designers of Poppy were not looking primarily at weight-saving. Unless you have to carry the bike, it is unlikely to be anything to worry about. Even given the weight, the nippiness of the Poppy is often stressed.
There are three gears, from a traditional Sturmey Archer 3-Speed. This is obviously not a multi-gear derailleur bike, but keep in mind what the Poppy is designed for – getting around town and country in style and comfort.
The polished silver wheels are 26” mountain-bike size, so beautifully in scale with the rest of the bike. The cream coloured tyres complement the pale blue or pink colourways of the frame to perfection.
Comfort is enhanced by the traditional sprung saddle. Made by Brooks in a rich brown colour, it looks great. Elegantly curved handle-bars give you a very comfortable riding position
The brakes are incorporated into the hubs, so again simplicity of appearance and operation is the aim.
The practicality designed into the bike is evident from the matching mudguards and proper chainguard to protect your clothes. Flat pedals mean that you do not need special shoes.There’s a bell and pump supplied fitted, so you don’t have to buy them separately.
A range of other accessories is also available from Pashley, including panniers, baskets and carriers.
I haven’t managed to find a negative comment from anybody who has bought a Poppy. It seems to fit into a frequently overlooked niche – a high-performance bike is not everybdy’s cup of tea, what many want is comfort, not just performance.
The Pashley Poppy delivers style, but without sacrificing quality. It’s classy and well-built, but lively as well. A winning combination we believe.
