Factors To Consider When Choosing A Hybrid Bike
Why is it that hybrid bikes appeal to so many? In essence, a hybrid takes the best characteristics of road- and mountain bikes. For many, the weight and wide tyres of a full mountain bike make cycling on the road difficult. At the same time, the uncompromising riding position of a road bike is too uncomfortable for leisure cycling and the narrow tyres make it impossible to explore the tracks and trails.
So how does this compromise work?
- Flat handlebars. These are far more suitable for the everyday cyclist than the drop handlebars fitted to road bikes. Vibration is absorbed by the padded grips and you can alter your hand position regularly to avoid strain.
- Medium-thickness semi-slick tyres. These result in low rolling resistance for speed on the road, but have enough tread on the side for exploring the grass and gravel. The wheels are customarily road size, 700mm, instead of the 26″ rims fitted to mountain bikes.
- A stretched MTB-style frame, or toughened road frame. The choice of style will depend on the market the manufacturer wants to target. The frame material is normally aluminium, although carbon is an option for those with deep pockets. Some may be equipped with suspension forks as well. Many models come in either mens or womens versions.
- The gears chosen are usually a good compromise between hill-climbing and distance-covering ratios.
However, no compromise is perfect for everyone, so there is a choice to be made depending on the style of riding you will be doing most, and also on your personal taste.
There are those who like a more MTB style as they anticipate doing more off-road riding than average. They could well appreciate a range such as the Cannondale Bad Boy. Off-road performance is enhanced by the MTB frames and the 26″ wheels and disc brakes featured on most models.
If the commute to work, combined with weekends out in the lanes is more to you taste, the Bianchi Camaleonte or Specialized Sirrus ranges could suit you better. These have 700mm road wheels, narrower tyres and road components. They are much better suited to covering the miles on the tarmac.
So the choices are available, whatever your style of riding. There’s little doubt that a hybrid bike is the best option for those who just want to get out cycling.
