Does it seem that everything is X-rated these days – particularly when it comes to X-treme sports?. In fact, if we’re to believe what we read, tends of thousands of people are skydiving out of planes, dangling from bridges, cleaving virgin snow or risking leaving a trail of skin on rough tar should they fall from their perilous perch on a skateboard.
It’s a multibillion dollar industry – and growing. For example, the US surfing industry posted retail sales of over $7b in 2008, while snowboarding grew by 30%. Another big flyer is paintballing which grew by 63% between 1998 and 2004. Other extreme activities such as mountainbiking, base jumping, skydiving and bungee jumping are also said to be on the rise.
So what’s driving this growth? Is it being driven by people’s need to break free from increasingly regulated lifestyles and overcome personal limitations or is it more about fun, challenge, excitement and pushing the boundaries?. It does however, seem that these high-octane activities do enable participants to escape ‘officialdom’ and provide them with almost impossible levels of adrenalin and achievement.
Another view is that it’s a lucrative media fabrication, where the participants count the cost of high risk (mis)adventures and the TV networks count the profits. Wherever the truth lies, it doesn’t alter the fact that the industry is huge. It’s now possible to do a degree in extreme sports management at some universities, multi-billion dollar extreme sports complexes are being constructed, some extreme sports are now included in the Olympic Games, networks cover the Extreme Games and there are dedicated TV channels.
But what makes someone jump out of an aeroplane or flatten the accelerator? Many of the people who do these alternative sports say it’s all about overcoming personal limitations.
A study from Australia found that people who did extreme or adventure sports weren’t reckless – in fact, they took great care to minimize their risk and they took great joy and humility from being close to the power of nature.
So if you feel up to plummeting towards earth at over 200 kilometres an hour or putting some air between you and the snowy ground on your snowboard – best you trade your chess board for an indemnity form.
