Getting Started with Creating Songs at Home Music Recording Studio
It’s possible to record and mix professional quality music at your home studio because of the incredible improvements in “prosumer” audio gear. A studio that might have cost many thousands of dollars to build 20 years ago can be built for about three thousand dollars these days.
The days of analog recordings are quickly becoming a memory so if you want to get started with a home music studio now you will most importantly need a high quality computer with lots of hard drive space and lots of RAM. Luckily quality computers are becoming less expensive over the years. I bought a computer with 8GB of RAM for just $800.
Once you order a quality computer you need some kind of DAW program (DAW stands for “Digital Audio Workstation”) that you will be doing all of your mixing and recording with. One obvious choice is ProTools but that doesn’t mean it’s the best choice for you, you may want to consider Logic Studio instead.
What’s next on the priority list depends on what kind of music you are interested in creating. If you want to make entirely electronic music without any sort of live instrumentation or vocals then there’s a good chance you will want to considering ordering various software programs such as Superior Drummer 2 but most folks (even those doing electronic music) will want to be able to record vocals and instruments and will need some sort of audio interface.
I should note that many audio interfaces come with a basic DAW program so you can kill two birds with one stone when you buy your audio interface.
To give a simple answer to the question “What is an audio interface?” I’ll just say it’s how your recorded sound (whether it be from a microphone or a direct input) gets into your computer.. Personally I use the E-MU 1616 and it’s highly recommended for people using a PC who don’t need a whole lot of inputs. There’s a wide selection of audio interfaces available, it’s really too large of a topic to cover in detail. Pro Tools is the so called “industry standard” when it comes to interfaces but that doesn’t mean it’s the best choice for you.
Microphones tend to be one of the first investments that most home recording enthusiasts make and for very good reason.. A good mic will allow you to record acoustic instruments, vocals, & amps. It will clearly be a very important part of your home studio. If you can afford it, I would recommend checking out the KSM44 Condenser Mic. I’ve been using this mic for years and I very highly recommend it.
Another piece of recording gear that I definitely recommend is the Art Pro VLA II Tube Compressor because it’s a really great deal at the price it sells for.
