Sticky Situation Number 1: Your Gas Pedal Jams
Most drivers learn how to operate a functional car, but not many of us learn what to do when something goes awry. Strike or tap the gas pedal with your foot. This might help loosen the part that is stuck.
Try to loosen the gas pedal by hooking your toe under it.
Use your gears to help by shifting to neutral. Step on the brake pedal and use steady pressure, but don’t lock the wheels.
Look for a safe place to where you can get off the road.
Keep the engine on! Many cars have power steering or locking steering wheels. If you turn your car off, you won’t have the assistance of power steering, or even worse, you won’t be able to steer at all.
Call 911 after you are stopped. Do not try to drive off even if you have managed to release the pedal. Your gas pedal could stick again.
Have your car towed, and then checked by a mechanic.
Consider running through your emergency plan in your head. By familiarizing yourself with steps you can use if your gas pedal sticks, you could be less likely to panic in that hazardous situation.
