Some Interesting AR Receivers
The choice of uppers for AR-15 builds has never been greater. Market forces have driven design innovation and quality control to the point where the user is spoilt for choice. We’ll look at three quality receivers out there that each offer something a bit different.
The Aero Precision COP monolithic upper is one of the lightest monolithic uppers available. This makes for a light but versatile carbine. The full-length top rail completely eliminates the wandering zero problems you sometimes get with separate forward rails. The kit arrives in a box with three full length Picatinny, two half smooth and half Picatinny and three full length smooth rails. Two of the rails have QD sling swivel stud mounts incorporated. This gives you an awful lot of optics and acceessory mounting choices. The unit comes with its own barrel nut, wrench and fixings. The only drawback is that you have to remove six bolts to get at the barrel for cleaning. This receiver is machined from an ultra strong 7075 T-6 aluminum forging and M-4 feed ramp cuts are incorporated. This is a ‘small pin’ upper compatible with Mil-Spec and commercial small pin lowers.
DPMS took a different approach with their competition uppers. They have done away with the ejection port cover, case deflector and forward assist, resulting in very smooth, clean lines. Let’s face it, most of us never get in a situation where dirt would get into the receiver and we don’t often need to shoot from the left shoulder. If you get a hard to chamber round you eject it rather than forcing it home. The weight saved from these components can be used elsewhere. There are two versions available. The DPMS Low-Pro puts its Picatinny rail at the same height you would find on an A3 or A4 rifle, enabling the most flexibility in mounting arrangements. The DPMS Hi-rider on the other hand puts the rail an inch higher than on an A3/A4. This makes BUIS problematic but enables you to mount large objective scopes with great rigidity. These receivers are intended for sporting, rather than law enforcement or military use.
There are a lot of enthusiasts out there who tell you that Colt uppers are the only authentic upper for an AR-15. Colt uppers are made to high specifications, but have the added complication of being ‘large pin’ which limits their compatibility with other manufacturer’s lowers. A captive market is never a good thing for the consumer. Colt uppers are available in traditional pre-A1 format in 9X19mm. This model does away with the case deflector and forward assist and can be fitted with the A1 500 meter backsight. The A2 carry handle and 800 meter backsight variant is available in 5.56X45 and 7.62X39 models. All the Colt receivers up to now have been completely stripped. The flat top receiver is intended for 5.56X45mm rifles and comes with a forward assist and dust cover fitted. Colt make quality receivers, but you might want to look elsewhere unless you are a Colt purist.
