How can I generate electricity to power bicycle accessories?
I saw once on a TV show on the Discovery channel a guy who used magnets and wires on the wheels of his bike to create a sort of alternator to generate power for a GPS unit on his bicycle. He had them routed through a rechargeable battery so the GPS unit would not lose power when he stopped pedaling. I would like to create a similar set up on a motor bike I’m going to be building to power a headlight, tail light, and turn signals. How would I create a similar set up? If I hooked it up to a small, rechargeable motorcycle or ATV battery, would such a set up be enough to power the devices and keep the battery charged? Would I need to include any sort of diodes or voltage regulators?
I think that cruiser bikes have their own alternators, just like a car. You might want to research that.
Another option is to use a regular car alternator, from a small car.
