What is the best brand of air pump for aquariums and how do you determine what size to get?
ie. if you’re only powering one small bubble wand how much smaller a air pump you could go or using a whole bunch of air powered decorations how much higher would you need to go?
Actually, I do need an aerator… My fish only hang out on the side of the tank that has the filter, when they go on the other side they start gasping.
MwM is correct bubblers are not needed in an aquarium.
However since your decorations are “air powered” and I am not sure how many, for your tank I would suggest a splitter this is an airflow control that hangs on the tank. You can get them with 4, 6 and 8 flow controls (these run about 2.50) Your air pump should be at least a medium flow. You can run the main hose to the splitter then from the splitter to your decorations. Turn on your pump see how your decorations look and adjust the flow control to each at the rear of the tank.
All air pumps are rated in GPH (Gallons per hour) Since you are not using the pump to push air thru powerheads, this really doesn’t matter much. not knowing the size of your tank, you are best to get one that fits the tank size.
Also, there are inline pumps however these are inside the tank and can add heat to the water so regulating a heater would be advised.
Externals should also be equipped with a backflow valve. This will not allow the water to back flow into the pump if the electric is dissrupted.
