Unemployment
Just as any professional activity, cycling is also affected by unemployment.
For example, in 1981 the number of professional riders was about 500.

Universality
Road cycling has long been dominated by European countries. Among men, Greg LeMond was in 1983, the first non-European world champion. Between 1927 and 2009, only four editions of the worlds road cycling were won by runners from another continent than Europe, Greg LeMond editions of 1983 and 1989 and Lance Armstrong, the 1993 edition both U.S. and Australian Cadel Evans in 2009. Among women, between 1958 and 2007, two U.S. have imposed Audrey McElmury in 1969 and Beth Heiden in 1980, other events being won by Europe.
Even today Europe is the continent that dominated the discipline in terms of both teams that the riders. In 2008 over 18 teams in the ProTour calendar 17 have licenses in Europe, only the Columbia cycling apparel Team is licensed in the United States. At the end of the ProTour 2007, among the first 100 riders that the UCI rankings there are 5 Australians, three Americans and two Colombians, the 90 remaining Europeans (21 Spaniards, 19 Italians, Belgians, 9, 8 Germans, French 7, 7 Netherlands, 4 Russians, 3 Luxembourg, 2 English, 2 Slovenians, a Belarusian, 1 Danish, 1 Lithuanian, 1 Norwegian, 1 Switzerland, 1 Swedish and 1 1 Czech Ukrainian) .
Great names
In 2000, the book edited by the French sports daily L’Equipe, 100 champions to a Century of Sport [19], established a ranking of 100 athletes of the century in any sport, which include Eddy Merckx, Fausto Coppi, Jacques Anquetil Alfredo Binda and Bernard Hinault.
Cycling, no women included in this ranking.
