Recognizing The Winning Difference In NASCAR
It is often suggested by casual NASCAR fans that you must have the faster car to win the race. In many instances this has proven the case. Both the drivers and the teams are working extended hours during the week to create just the right vehicle set up to provide the fastest possible speed before they reach the track on the weekend. As has been highlighted again and again by NASCAR news affiliates, there are no guarantees. Of course, not every car can be the fastest so racing teams are investigating new plans to find the one that will help them win.
David Reutimann won the 2009 Coca Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway after his crew chief Rodney Childers opted to keep his driver on the track while the leaders pitted. The race was more than half over, and precipitation was falling on the raceway. If the rains continued to pour on the surface of the track, the race would end. Reutimann, and two other drivers, Ryan Newman and Robby Gordon, betted on Mother Nature.
At approximately 6:30 p.m. eastern standard time, the NASCAR management stopped the race, and gave Reutimann his first ever win at the Sprint Cup. When a victory was due to weather-shortened circumstances, there has always been this proverbial asterisk placed next it. Fans typically bemoan a win such as that, perhaps referring to it as a lucky break. It is not uncommon to see such colorful reports circulated via NASCAR news bulletins. Still, NASCAR is a extremely competitive sport, if not the most competitive type of auto racing on earth. A win is a win, and every driver on the track would gladly perform the ‘rain dance’ if it meant that they were going to make the coveted trip to victory lane. It has become a privileged position in NASCAR news correspondents to witness the displays of amazing and winning strategies by racing teams.
Strategy was definitely a key ingredient in Reutimann’s win. Armed with the information from the latest weather reports, his crew chief decided to keep Reutimann out on the track. Had the rain ceased, and the other cars headed back out to the track, then they would have had to make a pit stop, but Reutimann and Childers knew they would have needed to make essential adjustments to improve vehicle performance. Adjustments such as these can be rather time consuming. As a result, they would have lost their position on the track if they had pitted with the lead vehicles; as a consequence, Reutimann opted to wait out the weather. This approach ended up being the right one to achieve victory.
Driver Kyle Busch had maintained the lead for 173 of the 207 laps that were paced, while the winner Reutimann jumped to lead position for five laps and after holding fourteenth position at the time the precipitation began.
NASCAR news reported similar events involving Jeff Gordon. In 2007, Gordon used a similar strategy to win a race at Pocono. He did not have a car that could contend for the win, but his team sensed that the rain showers were approaching, and it paid off. If the showers had come only five seconds later, Gordon would have likely finished in second place. Driver Ryan Newman was just passing Gordon’s car when NASCAR flew the caution flag.
It seems like all the stars in the skies must be in alignment to win a race. Tire strategy and fuel mileage are other strategies that can allow a driver to win a race without having the fastest car.
Back in 2003, Newman and the Penske Racing Team were known for using a smaller carburetor to draw out fuel mileage. Perhaps half of his eight wins in the 2003 racing season were a result of fuel mileage strategy.
In the past, some drivers have taken a two-tire pit stop in order to obtain track position late in the race, so they could go for the win. In a number of occasions, the strategy has worked in the driver’s favor.
It seems that a win is a win in NASCAR. Regardless of how the trophy reached their hands, a driver is going to accept it.
