Review Of The Giro Ionos – A Top-of-the-Range Road Cycling Helmet
The Giro Ionos is a no-compromise, top-of-the-range road cycling helmet. Designed for the road racer, triathlete, track racer or just keen road enthusiast, it incorporates some of the most advanced technology that Giro have yet come up with.
It’s fair to say that the casual cyclist is maybe not going to make the most of the features built into the Ionos. But if speed and distance are for you, the Ionos will give you maximum protection, together with the comfort levels you need for long days on the bike.
Start with the construction. The in-mould technique of manufacture bonds the polycarbonate shell to the impact absorbing polystyrene body in the mould, in one process. Using this method saves weight, and enables the inclusion of a carbon-fibre sub frame into the helmet .
The sub-frame confers immense strength and allows the design to accommodate the 21 large vents that are such a feature of the Ionos. These, coupled with the internal airflow channels give the helmet almost legendary cooling ability. Indeed, the manufacturers say that both Lance Armstrong and Alberto Contador use the Ionos when they have to face the hottest days.
The Giro Ionos comes in three sizes: Small (51-55cm), Medium (55-59cm) and Large (59-63cm) and comes supplied with removable X-Static pads which are silver-impregnated to destroy bacteria.
The final adjustment is made with the RocLoc 5 system – a ratchet dial tightens the internal straps to a perfect fit. One great advantage is that you can for example put a hat on in cold weather without having to modify the pads (the helmet actually comes with its own cap).
A wide range of colours is available, together with some special editions. Naturally it meets CE EN1078 certification.
The Giro Ionos is a helmet designed with the serious rider in mind. Its lightness and comfort should allow long days in the saddle, while the strength and protection are all you could ask for. You might well be racing – but these advantages are just as important to the enthusiast out for great days on the road for fun.
