A roof rack may seem like a great idea for hauling bikes, snowboards or luggage on your vehicle. However, roof racks significantly reduce your vehicle mileage. So is the roof rack worth it or is there another option?

The roof rack effect
Roof Racks are definitely good for hauling stuff. Your mileage can be reduced by 10 to 12 percent by just having an empty roof rack on your car. With a mountain bike, skis, snowboards, rooftop box or kayak on the roof rack, you will be reducing your mileage by 20 to 30 percent. Your Prius could now be a gas guzzler.
Other places to haul your stuff
Hauling stuff on your roof rack reduces your gas mileage. If you are like most people, though, that doesn’t mean you can give up hauling your gear. So how do we work with this mpg situation? You have some options.
A mounted rear rack
Mounting a rack on the back of your car may be your best bet for small items such as a bike. Over a roof rack, this could improve your gas mileage by 10 percent and still provides a lot of hauling space. Rear-mounted racks can work on hatchbacks, sedans or station wagons.
An aerodynamic trailer
Replacing your roof rack with a well-designed trailer can actually improve your miles per gallon. The hit that you end up taking will be a much smaller one.
Rent another car
The best gas mileage comes from hauling your gear on the interior of a vehicle. It might be financially easier to just rent a car that is big enough to haul everything. You could easily spend less to rent at $ 10 to $ 20 a day.
