What type of bike rack should I buy for my car?
Average bike: 18 speed, I think.
2002 BMW 3 series (325i, i think)
Which would be the best type of bike rack that’s still relatively inexpensive for my car and bike?
In a lot of ways, a trunk rack meets your requirements: a SERIS Bones or a Yakima King-Joe. Being a trunk rack, you don’t have to buy the pieces for the roof — the feet to attach to the roof, the cross bar and the individual bike racks. The SERIS and Yakima run about $160, so not a bad price. Read the reviews and see which you prefer. Each has followers and detractors, so you need to make your own judgement. Another upside of trunk racks is that you don’t have to lift the bike up to the roof to put it on the rack. Nor do you need to remove the front tire like on some roof racks. Trunk racks tend to have two drawbacks. First, you can’t really lock your bike up as anyone could cut the retention straps and take the bike and rack. Second, they often prevent you from accessing the trunk while they are on. Also, some oddly shaped bikes have a hard time fitting on a trunk rack, but Iv’e always found I can work around any geometry with enough bungie cords.
