CASE Tools In Rapid Application Development
All software development projects consider Rapid Application Development (RAD) as a desirable goal. When software applications are developed rapidly, companies can utilize the applications more quickly and realize the return on investment sooner.
Can CASE (Computer Assisted Software Engineering) tools help to achieve rapid application development?
What is rapid application development?
Companies want software to be built, installed and operating in the shortest possible time. RAD as a concept and a set of software development methodologies attempts to meet this objective. Since the early 1990′s, RAD has inspired techniques and tools designed to speed up development, including methodologies such as:
- Prototypes: a mock-up of a software program that is added to until the application is complete
- Iterative development: revision, enhancement and expansion of the software in small steps
- Agile: short release cycle of continual enhancements to the software, for example, scrum
- Extreme programming: defining requirements and coding in real time
- Lean or minimalist development: where the low priority and unnecessary requirements are removed or postponed
- Joint development: users are involved throughout the whole development cycle
All of these methodologies employ techniques and tools that remove or speed up elements of software development and/or re-arrange the requirements so that at least some parts of the software are up and running sooner.
RAD methodologies are reactions to the waterfall method of developing software with a focus of faster development. The waterfall method of development segregates development tasks into specific phases, for example, gathering all the requirements before starting the design and completing the design before starting coding. An application developed using this method is only complete once all development tasks are complete. Whereas the RAD method focuses on delivering smaller sections of the application at regular intervals.
Rapid Application Development and CASE.
CASE is a technique and a tool set designed to automate application development. Using CASE tools, software developers “describe” the application and save the description in a repository. The CASE tools use the repository as a source of information about the application to then generate the source code.
This declarative approach to writing software captures information about the application and postpones coding activities. It facilitates RAD by removing the need for developers to write all of the source code. Developers only need to write the code that cannot be described declaratively or code that is beyond the scope of the CASE tool.
CASE tools are diverse, supporting a wide range of development activities. Some simple CASE tools have limited functionality such as model diagrams to generate database schemas. Other CASE tools will generate an entire application.
CASE accommodates extreme and agile development techniques. Business users work with developers to describe the application by concentrating on specific components. The requirements go straight from the business users into the CASE tool. The process produces finished components on regular short cycles and eventually delivers the completed application.
CASE can also be used for a lean development methodology. Users can select the most important parts of the application and these parts are the first components completed and implemented for use.
Joint development and CASE are ideal partners. The declarative nature of CASE tools allows business users to participate in the application development from the start of the project. They act as advisors to business analysts and developers or they can participate in specifying the application. The learning curve for users is short as they do not need to know how to write applications. They only need to understand how to use the CASE tools to describe the application.
CASE work with iterative and prototyping rapid application development techniques. Using CASE tools to generate the source code for a component that has been described is a quick way of prototyping the application. The prototype is reviewed, the descriptions are amended to make any required changes and the source code is then re-generated. The application is built by continual iterations.
