Review Of The Kona Sutra Touring Bike
The Kona Sutra has been a welcome addition to the range of touring bikes available on the market. It’s the only touring bike on offer from Kona, even though they are well known for their stylish steel framed road bikes.
You can tell by looking at the frame geometry that Kona have borrowed a lot from their MTB experience – the marked slope to the top tube and the compact rear triangle. The lively yet stable ride will be the major outcome from the choice of this geometry. The choice of steel tubing for frame construction only adds to the comfort. Robust and flexible, the steel tubing will contribute to the resilience of the frame.
In contrast to most of its competitors, the Sutra features disc brakes. Tourers customarily use cantilevers, but the extra power from discs will be very welcome in tricky situations – trying to stop a fully-laden bike on a wet road can often be heart-stopping!
There’s a total of 27 gears from the triple chainrings. The gear derailleurs are Shimano, an efficient combination of Tiagra and Deore XT to front and rear. Traditional bar-end shifters are chosen. Those used to integrated gear/brake levers may find these strange, but with use they quickly become second nature, and have the bonus of being easy to maintain.
The handlebar is a nice Kona Road model. The drop is not too great, so the riding position is good.
Pannier racks to front and back are standard on the Sutra, as well as a proper set of mudguards, which are really essential for touring in the UK.
The bike comes without pedals, so you have to factor in the extra cost of those. Of course you may already have your own favourites, but in any case you can choose the most suitable style for you.
When you look at the Kona Sutra carefully, you realise just what a versatile bike it is. Yes it has the ability and capacity to carry you and your kit on extended trips, but it’s also great for getting out and about on a Sunday afternoon, as well as for fast commuting for the rest of the week.
It’s very well fitted out, with bags of style and attitude.
