Scott Sportster Hybrid Bikes – Sportster 30, 20, 25 & 10 Reviewed
The Scott Sportster range is extensive, and can appear a little daunting to get your head around at first sight. To try to give an organised picture, I’ve divided the range into two. Here we’ll take a look at the higher-priced part of the range, the Sportster 30, 20, 25 and 10.
It’s important to realise that price and model number do not correlate as you might expect. In fact the higher spec models have lower numbers, and vice versa. So the Sportster 10 is the highest priced model and the 30 is the lowest of this group. However, this doesn’t always follow – the 25 is more expensive than the 20
All four are available in standard Sportster and Solution versions. The original idea of the Solution was that it should be a womens bike. However, the more mountain-bike look has proved popular with many men.
Each version of a particular model differs in:-
- Frame geometry (and maybe colour)
- Handlebar – the Solution version being a bit longer and having a bit more bend.
- Saddle – the Solution saddle is a bit wider and more relaxed
Everything else – components, weight, price etc is identical between the Sportster and Solution versions of each model. The major differences between the models are in the area of brakes, gear components and front fork.
All Scott Sportster bikes have frames built to the same design, from 6061 aluminium. The tubing is double-butted for strength, with nicely tapered top and down tubes. The paintwork and graphics are superb and there’s enough clearance to fit mudguards and fittings for pannier racks if you want.
The first bike in this group is the Sportster 30. This is a natural upgrade from the Sportster 40, a bike designed for road performance. The 30 is mostly identical, but now features disc brakes, which unlike lower models in the range are hydraulically operated. The rims are also better and are a very smart white.
The Sportster 20 is the next model in the range. V-brakes feature again on this model, and upgraded Deore and SLX drivetrain components are a definite improvement. As the 20 weighs now only 12 kg, these upgrades mean that this is a fast bike, ideal for streets and the open road. The 20 therefore is significantly improved. At a cost it’s true, but it’s great quality.
The Sportster 25 is very similar to the 20. However it is fitted with Shimano hydraulic disc brakes and improved wheel rims. I guess that the Sportster 25 is getting quite close to the ideal combination of speed and off-road capability that you would look for in a hybrid bike. The extra on the price is well worth paying.
The top-of-the-range model is the Sportster 10. It’s priced a little higher than the 25. What do you get for the extra? Well, you get an even better suspension fork with Remote Lockout, an even better Deore XT rear derailleur and even better Avid disc brakes. All this plus a weight saving, down to 11.7 kg. Bear in mind that you can spend a lot more on other marques for the same level of equipment.
Read any Scott Sportster review and you will see that Scott are well known for the quality and value of their bikes. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.
