what disc brakes are best?
I was going to upgrade to discs on my rockhopper however I need new wheels and discs of course. i was thinking shimano Deore Disc/rhyno lite wheelset. now comes the fun part. i dont know what discs to get. i was thinking avid bb7 mechanical tektro auriga hydraulic. the only drawback for the hydraulic is i need new shifters but no big deal. what are some pros and cons to each besides having to bleed the hydraulics? (they cost the same)
If you go mechanical, go BB7 and don’t look back. They’re pretty good and it’s about one of the few products in mountain bike that everybody (or nearly everybody) say’s they’re the best in the category (mech. discs).
Bleeding hydros is not that big a deal. It’s something that you do every once in a long while.
On one bike I have a pair of Magura Louise BAT brakes, and they’re pretty awesome. Very good braking power, excelent modulation and they don’t fade over long distances. Other good hydros to check are Hope, Avid Elixir’s and Juicys, Formula, Shimano Slx or XT.
A good hydro will cost more than the BB7. My BB7 have been great, powerwise close to what my Louises would be if they had the same sized rotors, but where the Louises shine over the BB7 is modulation. It’s not that the BB7 are bad, just that the Louises are better in that aspect.
