Recycling Tyres : The Basics Explained
Even though tyre manufacturers pour huge amounts of money into tyre development with new, longer lasting designs and compounds, there is always the inevitable situation where tyres must be replaced. Tyres can be retread up to a certain number of times and only as long as they have been taken care of; but at some point in their lifetime, a retread may cause the structural integrity of the tyre to fail, risking the lives of the driver, its passengers and also other road users.
So the reason why it is common to see landfills with vast heaps of used tyres is because it used to be legal to dispose of old tyres in landfill sites. In 2003, European legislation was introduced to make this practice illegal and since then individuals and businesses have been encouraged to find different ways to either dispose of or recycle their old tyres.
It may be surprising to some, but there are a large number of ways people can recycle their used tyres themselves without having to pay somebody to dispose of their used tyres on their behalf.
Rubber takes a very long time to biodegrade; this means that it is a great material to recycle and use in gardens. Some great applications for used tyres are garden bedding, plant pots and even compost bins. Due to the nature of black material and the insulation abilities of rubber, a used tyre compost bin will actually perform better than a plastic molded one.
Recycling old tyres is a great way for you to do your bit for the environment, below is a list of the common recycling techniques.
Reprocessing – It is possible to shred used tyres down into small fragments which can be used for other applications such as road construction, soles for shoes, carpet underlay and also surface material for sports and play areas.
Fuel – A very small proportion of used tyres are used to substitute coal in cement kilns, though due to stringent air emission limits, this particular use is severely limited.
Other purposes – Old tyres can also used for other purposes such as crash barriers for racetracks, play items in children’s play areas, noise insulation and occasionally motorway embankments. The possibilities are almost endless.
To summarize, if you are looking to dispose of your old tyres then it would be advisable to contact your local tire retailer for advice. Alternatively, you can find ways to recycle your old tyres by using them in your garden. Remember that you must act responsibly; it is illegal to dump your old tyres and if you recycle, you are contributing to a greener environment.
