What Fashion Can Teach Us About Internet Marketing
At first glance, it seems like internet marketing and fashion are worlds apart. The only time fashion trends would factor into a marketing campaign would be if you were selling clothes. Fashion can’t have anything to do with the home finance industry, can it? Who cares what your niche market wears when your product has nothing to do with clothes.
On the surface, fashion seems to be a niche market separate from other markets, but the fact is that fashion is universal. Generally speaking, men don’t like to admit that they are fashion conscious, but they are. Whether they wear torn tee shirts or a business suit and a leather watch, they are making a fashion statement.
A construction worker, for example, puts on a pair of brown boots in the morning because they are practical. But why does he choose the color brown? Isn’t it because that’s what his workmates wear? His choice of color shows that he is aware of the fashion that defines his work. Wanting to fit in, he wears what the others wear.
Now let’s look at that from the internet marketer’s perspective. He wants his potential customers to feel that he is someone they can relate to. He may be selling a home loan package, but if the package he is selling is tailored to working class couples, a photograph of a construction worker wearing his workboots while closing a home loan deal will make the customer feel like the loan package fits his lifestyle even before he reads about the offer.
Let’s take another niche and see how fashion can figure into that. An affiliate marketer is trying to push a software program that drives traffic to your website. The people who would be interested in that product probably are struggling in an overheated niche. What they need is your program, but how do you convey to them the message that your product can help them fight internet traffic? Put on your black helmet and show them how tough you are!
Bikers are the tough guys on the road. Traffic pulls over for them as they weave their way through the masses on the freeway and head for the open road. Their bikes and their black outfits appeal to the rebel in us all. If you don a helmet and leathers and pose sitting on a shiny black motorcycle, you’ll be telling your clients that your software is new and tough and they can be, too!
Clearly, internet marketing and fashion have everything to do with each other. Fashion has its effect on us subliminally, even if we deny its importance consciously. Apply fashion to marketing and see dramatic changes to your success.
