Have you backpacked in Rocky Mountain National Park?
Have you ever backpacked in Rocky Mountain National Park? If so, did you take bear spray? And can you buy it cheaper than the $60-80 in a town close by the park?
I haven’t backpacked in RMNP but I’ve hiked there without bear spray. The day hikes restricted me to trails frequented by other hikers making it somewhat unlikely that I would encounter a bear. However, I for one would carry a can of bear spray if I were going backpacking in areas where a bear encounter is possible.
I have hiked in Alaska, Glacier National Park and the Canadian Rockies and always with a can of bear spray because of grizzlies. Since my adventures usually start with my flying into the area I’ll be visiting, the first thing I do when I hit the ground is buy a can of bear spray from a local sporting goods store. If you are flying you can’t purchase the bear spray ahead of time and have to buy it after you reach your destination. If you’re flying into Denver I suggest you look for the bear spray at REI. They have stores in Denver, Westminister and Boulder. A 7.3 oz can costs $45 and a 9.3 oz can costs $55. The smaller can should be sufficient. Unfortunately, you can’t take the stuff home with you on the plane and will have to dispose of it. I usually offer the spray to someone else who can use it. This could be another hiker or the hotel clerk. I have yet to come across anyone who refused a new can of bear spray.
Don’t forget to cut the shipping strap off the can’s safety clip before you start your hike. If you don’t do this you won’t be able to remove the safety clip to discharge the bear spray. Also, I see a few hikers with the bear spray in a pocket on their backpacks. When you need the spray you need it now and don’t have time to drop your pack to look for it. I always carry the can in a holster strapped to my pack waistband where I can easily reach it. Be sure everyone in your group knows how to remove the safety clip and discharge the spray. There won’t be time to read instructions if you ever need to use it and I hope you don’t. Have fun – be safe.
