Will recycled tire rubber chips make a good surface for my kids play area?
Is it easy to walk barefoot on? Will it make the bottoms of their feet dirty or black?
Please let me know if there are any problems with this type of material. I am thinking of buying some soon.
It makes a good play surface because it ‘gives’ a little if they would fall on it, but I would be careful letting them play on it barefoot. It would definately make the bottoms of their feet black (unless they’ve changed how they make it since it first came out- we had it at my school), and it can get hot in the sun.
But it’s better than wood chips, because it’s made from recycled materials and it’s much more ‘cushiony.’ It’s also better than sand. Sand also gets hot in the sun, and all the cats in the neighborhood would think your play area was a giant litter box.
If your kids are still young enough to want to put everything in their mouth, it might be dangerous, though. I don’t know exactly what chemicals goes into making tires, but some of it is probably toxic.
Have you thought about gravel? At a park nearby, there is gravel (little, round rocks) under all of the equipment, but I don’t know how expensive that would be. I know that you can get white gravel (maybe more expensive, though) and that probbly wouldn’t get so hot in the summer, and your kids would be fine being barefoot on it.
