I have written a number of articles about replacement window ratings but today I want to look at something different.
Get all your tools together before you start with the replacement exercise. The first thing to make sure you have is the pliers, your measured tempered glass, goggles for safety, putty knife, gloves, glazing compound, brush and a trash container for the glass that can be thrown away.
You should start by removing all the old caulking using a flat instrument or a putty knife. Make sure you save all glazer points. Take the pliers and remove the glass while wearing the goggles and gloves. Brush the slivers or the chips away. Then take some measuring tape and measure the space where you intend to put in the glass glass. Measure the bottom side, the top and on both side – left and right.
There is a place where the glass will fit into. This is the part to be measured. You need to be careful when taking your measurement as the glass shouldn’t be too tight nor too loose. One best way to avoid this is to make sure you live a space of about 1/8 on all sides. Once you’ve done that then try and fit the glass into the frame – do not rush this process.
Then you need to replace the glazier’s points, that is, if the window came with some. Make sure that the glazing compound is soft. You can do this by rolling it around your hands; If you are using a fresh one then there is no need to soften it.
Now take the glazing compound and spread it neatly around the window. Use the putty knife to seal it into the wooden or metal frame. You should make sure that all sides especially the corners have enough spread. View from the other side you should not see calking. You can clean any caulking spill on the following day and then leave everything to set – for about a week.
