Honda has officially released the new Insight.Costing over $23,000; the new Prius is a couple of grand more than the new kid on the block; the Insight. The Insight is now the least expensive hybrid out on the market in the U.S.
The Honda has a great system that will help educate the driver how to drive more economically and thus save fuel.The ECON setting can be switched off so that the insight will produce more HP, or when left on the car will help you drive more efficiently.An electric motor gives the engine a nice boost, this system is called the integrated motor assist or IMA. Th IMA system is cheaper to manufacture, lighter than the original, and adds to the overall interior space. I-VTEC helps the Insight where power and efficiency is concerned.The Insight has some great accessories that can be added onto the base model such as: a Blue Tooth six-speaker sound system, rims, vehicle control assist, F-1 inspired paddle shifters, and a navigation system. The Toyota has been the reigning king of the hybrid market for years now, but with the low price of the Insight, Honda is aiming to take away that title.
Opposed to the Insight is the Prius with a 160-hp 1.8L motor has a couple of different driving settings. The EV mode allows the Prius to run on battery power alone, the ECO mode’s responsibility is to ensure the optimum gas mileage is obtained, and then the Power Mode give more power and throttle response.An accessory on the Prius that is aimed at driver safety is called the precollision system. This system comes equipped with a radar that constantly measures the distance of the car ahead and presumably adjusts brake pressure when probability of frontal collision is high. The Prius also includes a new touch sensor system on the steering wheel to ensure safe driving.
Although the Honda is the cheaper of the hybrid competitors, the Prius has the better fuel efficiency and is noticeably larger than the Insight. The Honda has a reported 40-city mpg, 43-highway, and a combined mpg of 41; while the Prius has mpg of 48-city, 45-highway, and 46 of combined mpg. So, if you commute 20,000 miles per year (and gas costs $2.50 a gallon), owning the Honda would cost $1219 in gas per year and owning a Prius would cost $1086 per year. Rolling around in a Toyota Prius will save over 50 gallons of gas per year as compared to the Honda, but it would take 27 years of driving to recoup the lower cost of the Insight.Ok the Prius gets way better fuel economy, yet the Insight makes up the difference with its low starting price!
