Don’t Obsess About Weight With A Bike
The thing that people can get a little overly hung up about with bikes is weight. Bike riders can over emphasise the importance of having a light bike. The simple fact is, unless you’re a fully paid up member of the Olympic Team the effect of a bike’s weight on riding is vastly over exaggerated. Sure, the Surly Cross Check is quite heavy, but hey, don’t worry about it. Just enjoy riding the bike. The smooth ride, the strength of the bike, its stability and comfort all far outweigh any minor concerns over its weight. And the bike has versatility too. In one review we found, the owner said that within 8 feet of riding the bike, he knew it was the one for him! As one user said: “this thing is just perfect for the urban commuter.” But equally, the Surly Cross Check will take you across country too, and is surprisingly good at climbing hills.
The bike can be built with gears or as a single speed or fixed-gear. It’s not built for touring all the time, but once in a while is fine. That will be made more simple by the front rack as well.
As discussed, the cross-check is in no way light light – but nor should it be. It’s pointless to compare it to an aluminum/carbon cross bike. You are not comparing like with like. But one thing that has been said about the Surly Cross check, and we agree: “It’s the Swiss Army Knife of bikes.”
