Review Of The Dawes Galaxy Touring Bike
First introduced in 1971, the Dawes Galaxy has been the choice for many looking for a serious touring bike. Practical, well-equipped and affordable, the Galaxy must have covered tens if not hundreds of thousands of miles.
The bike was first designed around a traditional diamond frame with fairly upright lines and horizontal top tube. This year’s model has a much more contemporary look. The frame is much more relaxed, with a moderately sloped top tube. All this results in a more forgiving ride.
What has been retained is the Reynolds steel tubing used for building the frame, although 631 is now the steel of choice instead of the original 531. The steel forks continue the theme of robustness and load-carrying capacity. The finish on the bike is a beautiful British Racing Green.
It’s notable that even with a steel frame, the weight of the Galaxy is still only 13.3kg – so a steel frame does not lead to a heavy bike – you don’t need aluminium.
A combination of Shimano Deore and Tiagra components is used in the 27-speed geartrain. Gear changing is by bar-end shifters. These may feel odd to anyone used to combined gear/brake levers on a road bike. But once you are familiar with their operation, they are easy to use. An additional advantage is that they are comparably easy to mend and maintain.
The brakes are powerful cantilevers. These are similarly easy to fix and adjust.
The Alex Double Wall rims are designed for strength and damage-resistance. The Schwalbe Marathon 32mm tyres, which are reinforced with Kevlar, have enough volume to absorb any road vibration – and the Selle Gel saddle will finish the job.
It’s apparent from the rest of the features that Dawes have incorporated that they have striven to produce a bike that any touring enthusiast is going to welcome:-
- A stout Tubus rear rack. Naturally the front forks are designed to carry pannier racks.
- Proper mudguards
- Double-sided pedals – flat on one side, SPD-compatible on the other
The Dawes Galaxy has deservedly won its place at the head of the list of the best touring bikes on the market at the moment. It’s just as practical for hopping on for a trip to the shops – although it’s most at home covering the miles out in the open countryside. Its thoughtful and practical design makes it just as useful for both.
