Adding an internally geared up and a Schlumpf to a fixed gear bicycle?
I need a bicycle ASAP, and I want something relatively simple and cheap(ish). I love the simplicity of a fixed gear, but I know I’m going to eventually need some gears, but I don’t have the money to do it up how I want. If I were going to get a relatively inexpensive fixed gear, would I run into any problems adding an internally geared up like a Shimano Nexus and a Schlumpf Speed Drive down the road?
Simplest but most expensive (MUCH more expensive) solution is the Schlumpf. Changing gear while moving would be almost impossible though.
The Nexus is a cheaper option (especially if you have a second wheel built up) but, of course, it’s not a fixed gear. Make sure you get the 8 speed (not 7) version, preferably in the pro spec – it’s better made than the standard version.
