Making Your Wall Mounted Fountain Pet Safe
You may want to put up a wall mounted fountain, but are concerned that your cat or dog will climb onto it, drink out of it, or otherwise endanger itself because of the new and interesting water feature you’ve put up. Pets are especially drawn to fountains because of the flesh, flowing water. Most animals, pets included, prefer drinking moving water over still water, because still water is much more likely to carry parasites or toxic microorganisms. There are several simple ways you can ensure your pet’s safety while enjoying your wall mounted fountain:
Location
If you have an area of the house where your pet is not allowed to go, such as a formal dining room or study, this is a good place to hang your wall mounted fountain. You may need to spend some time reinforcing your pet’s existing training in order to overcome their curiosity. This should be much easier, however, than teaching your pet not to touch a new piece of furniture.
If you don’t have such an area, hang your wall mounted fountain in an area that is inaccessible to your pet. For dogs this can be as simple as putting the fountain up farther than the dog can easily jump. For cats that climb, you must be sure that your fountain is a safe distance away from any climbable objects of a similar height. Take advantage of high-ceilinged spots such as staircases and entryways, if necessary, to hang your fountain at a substantial height.
Mounting
In the event that your pet does get its paws on your wall mounted fountain, you want to ensure that the fountain doesn’t fall, frightening and possibly injuring your pet. If you mount your fountain on sheetrock or plaster, be sure to anchor it well in studs, even if it is light enough that it does not require the extra support. Explain your needs and ask your fountain dealer about more secure mounting options. You may be able to mount it securely against the wall using specialized brackets or other hardware the dealer can provide you.
It’s especially important to make sure your fountain is on a GFCI circuit when you have pets; this will protect them from a potentially fatal electric shock in the event of a fall or short circuit. Have an electrician install a GFCI switch when you mount your fountain.
