Activity Holidays : Be Organized
In this installment of our activity holidays guide we look at preparation.
Planning accordingly for your activity holidays will ensure you will have the best time possible while you are on them. Depending on what type of activity you will be doing, you should make sure that you are both mentally and physically fit, as well as prepared for every eventuality.
You should engage in some aerobic activity (jogging, cycling, swimming, etc.) at least 30 minutes a day, 3 times a week as preparation. You should make sure you work up to a certain intensity level as you get closer to your activity holiday since you will probably be very physical through it with little down time.
Some things you will be doing like ice climbing or canoeing will not be practical to practice, but you can prepare for hiking and biking. If practicing for the specific activities on your holiday isn’t possible, the best fallbacks for preparation are cycling and walking.
Your activity holiday will more than likely require a few necessary items, so it important that you pay attention to the things your guide tells you to bring since they have been out there more than you and know what is needed. In addition to what your tour company advise you to take, you should take only the absolute basics as you’ll probably have to carry your bags (take one large one and a smaller daypack) around more than what you would on a ‘normal’ holiday.
It is generally best to wear durable, comfortable, fast-drying garments, in layers. Take rain gear, warm jackets, hats for sun protection and cold weather, long and short pants, long and short sleeve shirts, additional clothing for non-sports activities and an extra pair of shoes incase your primary pair get wet. You might also want to consider a bathing suit and eye protection.
Check if you’ll need a sleeping bag, small pillow, ground pad, tent and possibly cooking equipment, food and cutlery. You can sometimes rent these items from the activity holiday company if you don’t already have them. And even though your guide will have an emergency care kit with them, you should have your own basic one with band aids, alcohol swabs, pain relievers and bug repellant in it.
