Something Completely Diverse With The Naruse Pedal
The default configuration of pedals for cars, with the accelerator and also the brake so close together poses a risk, believe it or not. There just hasn’t been a good enough option, though a jet fighter style throttle would be Awesome. A major risk is stepping hard on the gas when you mean to brake. Masuyuki Naruse had two incidents where he accidentally hit the gas rather than the brakes. Naruse (the end is pronounced say), as outlined by the New York Times, knew there was a solution. He thought that a single pedal would be better than the dual pedal system. So he started work on a pedal that could accelerate and brake without the potential mistake. He went into his workshop for making it happen. He came up with a prototype by 1991.
Toyota wasn’t amazed
This pedal is for both gas and brakes, but a little different. The foot pedal is the brake, and the accelerator is a lever that has to be operated with the foot. To speed up, you move your foot to the right. Brake normally. Toyota got one about 10 years ago. They didn’t decide to buy it. Naruse isn’t the first person to think of it either. A Swede named Sven Gustafsson invented something comparable. It is being tested in Sweden.
This can be a serious dilemma
There is a real danger to dual pedals. In Japan, the Institute for Traffic Accident Research and Data Analysis observed 6,700 accidents, 9,500 injuries and 37 deaths from stomping on the wrong pedal in emergencies. In the 1980s, a psychological study by Richard A. Schmidt found the foot can slip to the wrong pedal if neruomuscular processes are disrupted, which can be caused by an emergency situation. Naruse pedals are certified as street legal for 130 automobiles, and Naruse invited Akio Toyoda, president of Toyota to test the pedal himself, but Toyoda did not accept.
