Cut-Off Road Rage
We have all observed aggressive drivers and some of us have even witnessed road rage. Even though legislation labels both behaviors as aggressive driving, there is a distinction between the two. Aggressive driving is taking risks while driving – tailgating, abrupt lane changes, cutting off drivers, passing on the right and speeding. Road rage involves uncontrolled anger (usually over a traffic dispute) that results in violence or threatened violence to a motorist, passenger or pedestrian. The New York Times reported that a recent Gallup poll showed that motorists were more worried about road rage (42%) than about drunk driving (35%).
In 1998, Arizona became the first state to enact a law making aggressive driving a crime. Since then, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Maryland, Nevada, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Vermont and Virginia have passed laws specifically defining aggressive driving actions. California and Utah have amended reckless driving laws to encompass aggressive driving behaviors. New Jersey enforces aggressive driving infractions under the careless driving statute or any statute the officer deems appropriate and Pennsylvania passed a resolution to encourage drivers to drive courteously and defensively. All other states target the problem with laws already passed, such as reckless driving, negligent driving or vehicular manslaughter.
The profile of a “road rager” may surprise you. Angry, aggressive drivers cross all personality types, age, race, socioeconomic and gender lines – even mild-mannered people can react with rage to another driver. Not surprisingly, road rage is heightened by alcohol and drug use.
According to AAA, incidents of road rage increase approximately 7% every year. It may be triggered by a variety of stimuli, including:
- Tailgating
- Flashing headlights to signal driver to move over
- Obscene gesturing
- Honking the horn.
- Driving in the passing or left lane at a slower speed, blocking the flow of traffic.
- Cutting people off.
- Slowing down after passing someone.
- Not making a right turn in the right-hand turn lane.
- Not reacting quickly after the red light turns green.
- Long commutes
- Traffic congestion
Education is a key factor to neutralizing road rage. Some states now include road rage education in their driver education material. Education campaigns have also been developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the National Safety Council and the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. The basic common sense guidelines every driver needs to know are: do not antagonize or make eye contact with other drivers and be forgiving of other drivers.
Remember, when you are driving you can minimize road rage by obeying laws, signaling lane changes, traveling a safe distance behind the vehicle in front of you, staying attentive to your driving, using your horn sparingly and being tolerant of others. If you start feeling frustrated with other drivers, create a distraction or take a break from driving. Don’t get into a car accident or jeopardize your life by getting caught up in road rage.
