To change the washer do you remove the circlip on the splined shaft or undo the big nut at the bottom

I now dont know what to belive. When I googled the question the web sites that came up say its the big nut on the main body of the tap that you have to remove ?
circlip, don’t undo the bottom nut! and turn the mains water off first!!!
Sorry, I wasn’t very clear… You undo the top of the tap, the bit that has a red or blue colour or H or C, then undo the screw. Then undo the nut at the bottom of the spine… I thought you meant the big nut that holds the whole tap in place. My apologies.
