How We Can Make Surfboard Production Greener
Surfing and nature seem to go hand in hand. The crashing waves, the fresh sea air and the reliance on mother nature for good surf, all suggest that this is the most wholesome of extreme sports. It has recently come into the limelight however that many environmental experts have spotted a darker side to the sport. The reality is that surfboard manufacture is responsible for a number of different hazards to both the environment and to humans.
Most surfboards nowadays are formed from a core of polyurethane foam. This is then covered by a layer or two of fibre glass and then coated in a protective polyester resin. A substance widely considered as carcinogenic can be found in the foam, named toluene diisocyanate. The styrene gas that is also produced during manufacture has been criticised by health professionals due to its harmful effect on the nervous system and its ability to cause nausea, tiredness and disorientation. Further to this, production also releases volatile organic components (VOCs) and carbon into the atmosphere. The biodegradable quality of most surfboard compounds is quite poor as well.
Gordon Clark, a surfboard producer in California has even shut his factory down after all the negative attention it received recently. 85 percent of all blanks came out of Clark’s factory at one point but when State of California leaned on him heavily it was the last straw and he made the decision to shut down the equipment for good. The knock on effect of this is that there is a large shortfall in blank surfboards in America and most effected companies have begun their hunt for alternative sources.
One such alternative has been developed in Cornwall, England. The Surfers Against Sewage charity in England helped develop Biofoam, one of the newest products to hit the market. The material is around 65 percent more renewable and emits 35 percent less harmful toxins due to the fact it is 45 percent plant based. On top of this, a new 95 percent natural resin coating is now being used on their ‘Ecoboards’.
The makers of the Ecoboards, which use Biofoam have been approached by surf companies from around the world. It is still early days but they soon hope to start applying their eco-technology to the production of snowboards also.
