Shimano 105s vs. Ultegras?
Is there a real significant difference amongst the two? I am not looking for components on a race bike so 50 grams of weight difference really isnt an issue. I am concerned about the shifting capabilities of each. Are 105s just as smooth, precise and fast as Ultegras? A typical ultegra groupset would cost around $1,000 while the 105 groupset would cost roughly $300 less. There isnt a significant price difference if you are paying a lot of money for your bikes but what if you wanted to build the PERFECT bike at the lowest costs? Is the $300 difference to upgrade really worth the investment?
I am considering Shimano 105s on my new bike and perhaps even the SRAM Rival but I heard horror stories about poor shifting on the front derailleurs on the SRAM Rival groupsets. I could just stay with Ultegras but I am wondering if thats necessary?
My bike has Ultegra. It shifts smoothly and reliably. I’m very satisfied with the group. One of the guys I ride with has 105. His bike shifts smoothly and reliably. He’s very satisfied with the group. If you can use that $300 difference towards a better set of wheels, then go with 105.
