The Specialized Sirrus Range Of Performance Hybrid Bikes
The Specialized Sirrus range seems to get better every year. Since their first introduction in the 1980s, they have been seen as the standard for sporty hybrid bikes that eveybody had to beat. The range of components and specifications was wide. As a consequence, there was a bike from the Sirrus range to suit all tastes.
We have chosen to focus on three of the 2011 models. The entry-level Sirrus, the Sirrus Sport and the Sirrus Elite.
Here are the main features that are common across the range.
- All are reasonably priced. Depending on components, you will pay between £350 and £550.
- All are built around a double-butted A1 Aluminium frame.
- All feature V-brakes with EZ Fire shifters, triple chainrings, double-wall rims with all-terrain tyres and flat pedals.
Perhaps the major component to show variation across the range is the front fork – steel blade on the Sirrus, aluminium on the Sport and carbon/aluminium on the Elite. The elastomer inserts on the Elite cut down further on road vibration. So the money buys greater responsiveness, smoothness of ride and a reduction in weight from 11.9 kg down to 10.6 kg.
The quality of the Shimano geartrain components increases up the Sirrus range. Most people may notice this – many may not. Additionally you get a much nicer stem and handlebar with bar-ends on the Elite.
There’s little doubt that all these bikes are really good-looking. Some may even say beautiful. I think I would. All the colours are beautiful. Particularly eye-catching is the black/grey paintwork on the Sport. The welds are smooth, the tubing tapered and curved and with the cables routed inside the tubes, the effect is particularly elegant.
These are bikes designed both for urban commuting and evening and weekend getaways. All have either 21 or 24 gears, which will suit every sort of riding condition.
Which one would we choose to buy? Not an easy question to answer. At £350 the Sirrus is a great entry-level bike. However the aluminium and carbon forks on the higher models will probably be worth paying for. If money did not enter into the decision, you would probably go for the Elite. But then it rarely is, is it! All these bikes represent great value for money. We think you’d be delighted to own and ride any of the Specialized Sirrus range.
