Dandelions: A Friend In Time Of Need
Dandelions are known for their bright yellow flowers that are later replaced by a globular fuzzy sphere, sending seeds floating away in the breeze. Some people look at this flower as a persistent weed that will invade even an immaculate turf.
This flower has smooth, toothy edged, and hollow, milky, stalks that yield an individual flower. Also called ‘swine’s snout,’ Dandelion’s green sepals encircle its closed bud producing a silhouette that resembles a pig’s nose.
A number of plants mimic Dandelions. Check the leaves and flower stems. In the event the leaves are found to be hairy or if the flower stems are found to be branched — or the root shape fails to agree with the description of Dandelion root – you’ve discovered a look alike and not a genuine Dandelion flower.
A nourishing food as well as a favorite tonic, Dandelions happen to be edible from the root, to the leaves as well as the blooms. Obtain Dandelion out of a place KNOWN to be free of pesticides & poisonous chemical contaminants (avoid roadways).
LEAVES
The contour of the leaves prompted the naming of this vegetable. The borders of the leaves are referenced by the French term ‘dent du lion.’
Early spring is the most effective season to pick leaves because this is the time of year (prior to the flowering) when the plant’s energy is concentrated on fresh growth. These are tasty enhancements to soups, salads, teas or tonics. Dandelion leaves are excellent consumed fresh and can be dried for later use.
To clean them place the leaves in a basin of water and agitate gently. Allow the leaves to soak while the dirt settles to bottom. Remove gently so as not to stir up the dirt in the bottom of the basin. Wash them with running water and set them in a colander to drip-dry.
BLOOMS
Blossoms are best harvested before the heat of the day, in the mid to late morning hours, when the dew has gone. The blooms keep closed under cloudy skies. The heads close when rain threatens. The blooms also shut at night (or late afternoon) and open once more once the plant comes into full sun.
For simple harvest of blooms, pull only the bloom and it will release near where the green leaves at the base of the blossom (the sepals) connect with the stem. Soak and rinse these utilizing the same technique as for the leaves.
ROOTS OF THE DANDELION
Dandelion roots can be eaten fresh or dried. Well-tilled earth yields some of the greatest quality roots. They form a thin, carrot-shaped tap that is twisted and fragile, milky white in color and growing deeply in the earth. When unearthed, the plant will replicate from broken off bits of root remaining in the soil.
The roots are least bitter in the middle of summer when it is preferred to gather them. These are highest quality from free, damp earth located in shady locations. Roots are not as vigorous during frosty conditions and should not be gathered at such a time. However, it isn’t a problem to collect during wet weather. A long trowel or fork can be used to lift carefully and continuously. The useful juice of the roots is going to be lost by hemorrhage if they are cut or broken off during harvest.
If overly large, Dandelion roots are able to be cut in three to six inch sections or they may be dried out whole. These roots generally take about two weeks to dry. They will shrivel to ½ inch or smaller in diameter and look dark brown with lengthwise, spiraling creases. Thoroughly dried roots will be hard enough to break whenever bent, exposing a white interior. Stash the dehydrated roots in an arid place in order to prevent mold and in a snugly covered container in order to shield them from pests. They can keep for one season.
ENCOURAGING TO CREATURES
The nectar of Dandelion blossoms attracts hoverflies, bees, and butterflies. The seeds of this plant are also appreciated by Finches.
