How To Use Snap And Metric Taper Gages
Building a house or other infrastructures require precision. Those who are involved in the process have to make sure that they do their jobs right. There has to be no room for errors especially when it comes to measurements. This is the reason engineers, architects, and basically anyone who is directly involved in putting together stuff use metric taper gages. These gages help these people make accurate measurements that can ensure everything is done right. Metric taper gages are used to determine the distance between two surfaces. There are 2 types of gages: feeler and taper. The first one is used to measure the distance between straight surfaces while the latter measures distance between angled surfaces. Taper gages are pointed at one end while the other one is wedged.
Here are the steps on how you can use these gages. Remember that metric taper gages have to be lubricated all the time so it will be easier to slide them in between the surfaces you want to measure. Assess the surface you have to measure and then choose which of the gages you think can fit the space. Slowly slide the blade into the narrow space. Be conscious of how the blade slips in. Take note of how tight or loose the blade feels in between the space. You may not be able to get it right during the first attempt. This is alright. Depending on how tight or loose the space is, take the next blade and slide it in. Do that until you find the right gage that touches both sides of the surface and doesn’t feel too tight. That should tell you the exact measurement you need. Another measuring device commonly used is a snap gauge. This is used to measure lengths of part features. It looks like a C-shaped clamp that has a hex wrench, insulated handle, digital indicator lights, adjustment wheels, bezel clamp, backstop, locking wheels, top and bottom anvils, and guard. These are used when the thickness needs to be measured repeatedly for accuracy. These gauges are similar to calipers, indicators, micrometers, plug and ring gages.
When using the snap gauge, you have to follow specific instructions to make sure you get the results right and also to ensure safety. Unlike metric taper gages, this can be a bit more complicated. Use the handle firmly and don’t touch the gauge itself. This is to prevent transferring your body heat and affect the reading. The same thing goes with the standard plugs. Don’t touch any part other than the plastic ends. Make sure to use a clean cloth when cleaning the anvils and backstop. Most importantly, follow the instructions on the manuals. This is the best way to know if you’re using the device properly.
