Throwing A Family Cookout That Will Impress The In-Laws
Impressing the in-laws is a time honored tradition, especially when there are mixed feelings around the relationship. When you host a family cookout, you want things to perfect. You want to show your mother-in-law that you can bake a delicious cake and serve up food that melts in your mouth. In other words, you want them to see that their son made the right choice.
The first thing you have to do is plan what you are going to serve. Depending on the type of in-laws you have, you have to decide how simple or elaborate things are going to be. Traditionally hamburgers and hot dogs are served, but you can do barbecue chicken, steak, and even lamb on a grill easily. Side dishes should complement the meat. Potato salad or baked potatoes both work well along with some baked beans and a fresh tossed salad with lots of fresh vegetables. And, of course dessert, baking and decorating a cake would top things off.
The day before the cookout, go through your home with a fine toothed comb. You want everything to be perfect. You know that your mother-in-law will be inspecting it on her way to the backyard. It doesn’t matter that no one will really be in the house that day, what matters is that it will still be examined and you want to avoid any criticism or funny looks.
When it comes to preparing the food, a few of the things can be done the day ahead. Potato salad and baked beans are the perfect example of this, do them the day ahead so they are ready and this also enhances their flavor. However, the cake should be done the morning of the cookout. To speed things up, use a kitchenaid hand blender to mix it quickly and evenly so you can get in the oven fast and it has time to cool. Baked potatoes can be done on the grill, so all they’ll need is a quick scrub and wrapped in aluminum foil.
Since it is a family cookout, let your husband do the grilling on his ducane 31731101 affinity 3100 propane grill black so that is one less thing you need to worry about. When you set up the tables, try to use real cloth tablecloths because they’ll look better. If you are worried about stains, buy the ones with Teflon coating because they’ll wipe clean. If you can get a canopy, do so as that would keep the sun off the food and the guests, if not possible use patio umbrellas. For your plates, go for the nice heavy duty plastic ones, they look nice and are sturdy.
After the yard is ready and before the guests arrive, get started on your cake. You want to show your mother-in-law that you know how to decorate cake, so have a design in mind before starting. While you are doing that, heat up any food that needs it so it is ready. Once everything is ready for serving, don’t forget to clean up the kitchen.
Even if your in-laws are hard to please, a family cookout is the best way to try. At the very least, you’ll have the whole family together having a great time and get to show off your cooking talents. But be warned, no matter how good it is and how hard you have to laugh at your father-in-laws jokes, your mother-in-law may not admit that it was indeed perfect.
