The Specialized Vita – A Great Womens Hybrid Bike
The Specialized Vita is the first model in the Vita range of sporty women-specific hybrids from Specialized. It is essentially an entry-level bike – but with specifications and components that belie that description. It shows all the pedigree that you would expect in the Vita range.
That the Vita is aimed at those wanting performance and speed is plain in the choice of lightweight frame and 700mm road wheels, whether that’s for fast commuting or covering the miles at the weekend. Naturally it will handle the odd foray off the beaten track, but that’s not principally what it is designed for. If it’s riding for fitness or for great fun that you’re after, the Vita could be just the bike for you.
The women-specific geometry of the beautiful aluminium frame really defined the Specialized Vita look – the smooth-welded, curved and tapered tubing is stunning. Mudguards and panniers can be fitted if you wish. Some people will tell you that an aluminium frame is harsh and unforgiving. I don’t think that’s true – but in any case the 32 mm tyres smooth out excessive road vibration anyway.
The steel straight-blade fork is almost indestructible. Mudguards and a Pannier Rack can be fitted.
The good quality Shimano levers, shifters, drive train and V-brakes will get you going (and stopping) with no problem at all. A triple chainring gives you 21 gears, the lowest of which will get you up most hills. Gear selection is by EZ Fire – two small levers, shift up with the thumb and down with the forefinger, one click per shift – a really easy system to use.
The Vita handlebar is alloy and has a slight rise for a comfortable riding position. It’s fitted with triple-density women-specific Gel Grips which should really smooth out vibrations and be comfortable for miles in the saddle. The women specific Body Geometry saddle has generous cushioning and is going to be very comfortable.
Specialized’s own All-Condition Sport tyres are standard. These have plenty of grip for tracks and trails, but low rolling resistance on the road. They have Flak-Jacket puncture resistance too.
The flat pedals and chainguard fitted to the Vita is testament to the fact that most people will want to cycle in their normal clothes – not lycra and cleated shoes.
Four sizes are available – XS, S, M & L. The finish on all is a beautiful Teal Green.
The entry-level Specialized Vita is great value for money. It’s light in weight, carries quality components and shows plenty of style – enough to turn heads on the trip to work or out in the lanes for fun. It’s difficult to fault at around £350.
