What is the importance of a double bass pedal?
I’ve been playing drums for a couple years now, and I’m considering getting a double bass pedal. How can you play the double bass while still keeping track of the hihat?(comes with experience, I guess) And what would be the difference of playing on two separate bass drums or just getting a double bass pedal? Thanks!!!!
The importance of it is relative to the type of music you wish to play. A lot of modern metal and hard rock utilize the double bass sound to enhance the music. The nice thing about a double pedal is that, besides only needing one bass drum, it allows you to be more flexible setting up your drum kit. It also allows you to position the pedal right next to the high hat pedal. The double bass is not used in conjunction with the hi hat but rather as a means of doing bass drum “flourishes” like a quick quad roll on the bass drum or the occasional driving rhythm with a ride or open hi-hat wash over it. Using the double bass drum technique is a true art unto itself and is worth studying in depth to learn how as well as when, and when not, to use it.
There are drummers who prefer 2 bass drums because it allows for a slightly different tonality between the two drums. This is a functional preference and not just a visual factor
