A Solar Tube Skylight Fills a Home With Natural Light
Many people want to get natural light into their homes. One option is to use a skylight. The typical skylight has many good things to recommend it, but it also has drawbacks. One benefit is that it’s possible to watch the sky, the stars and the weather through it. A drawback is that it’s not possible to have many of them throughout a house without causing problems. A better option is to go with a solar tube skylight.
These skylights are exactly what they sound like. They are nothing but a simple tube with a dome, or cupola, of glass that the top. They can actually provide more light than a regular skylight does because of the fact that the inside of the tube has been polished to a mirror-like finish. It reflects light back many times, making it brighter than it would otherwise be. That means that even dim light from a cloudy day will still be bright and provide a pretty good amount of light. The solar tubes also cause the light to be more diffuse.
The biggest benefit that a solar tube skylight has over a regular skylight is the fact that it can provide light to places other than directly under it. Because of the fact that they are highly polished tubes they can be run to provide natural light to places that wouldn’t otherwise be able to get it. A tube skylight can provide light into a closet or hallway. If one side of a house gets light and the other doesn’t then tube lights can be used to carry light to rooms on that side of the house.
Using solar tube skylights can save the homeowner money. They provide lighting during the day so that the homeowner doesn’t have to use electric lighting. Because of the reflective nature of the tubes they can even provide that light on overcast days. Directing them into places that would be dark, like closets and hallways, help spread out light through the house. They can also be used in kitchens and home offices, places where stronger light is needed.
These lights are reasonably inexpensive to install. For around $500 the homeowner can buy the light and have them installed, or they can install the lights themselves, if they are familiar with DIY. The homeowner can also get skylight accessories to make their lights work better and help them fit better into the home.
For the homeowner that wants natural light in their home and wants to save money on lighting costs a solar tube skylight is the perfect choice. They can direct the light where they want it. They can have strong natural light in their home, which makes it feel airier, and they can save money doing it.
