When Does Drug Abuse Turn Into Dependency?
When talking about drug abuse and addiction, many people think of them as being one and the same, but the truth is that there is a difference betwen dependency to drugs and the abuse of drugs. People become addicted to drugs by abusing them, but there is a lot more involved in the actual addiction than just abuse.
Misuse of drugs is simply using drugs in a way that they were not intended repeatedly. You could also define it as misusing a chemical substance habitually. Using drugs for something other than their intended purpose is what this definition includes. In fact, drug misuse has a range of definitions, but all suggest disapproval at the use or overuse of a drug for non-therapeutic reasons.
On the other hand drug dependency happens when a persons body becomes addicted to having that chemical in their system and when they don’t have it they can suffer from withdrawls that cause physical and real adverse symptoms to the person addicted. Drugs mess with the ability of the brain to function correctly and in so doing alter the brain to where it needs those drugs in order to function in its perceived normal way.
People who are addicted to drugs, will use the drug no matter what type of adverse health reactions they get from doing so. I don’t really care about how the drug affects their personal health as long as they are able to continue getting that feeling that they receive from their drug of choice. Quitting for these people just isn’t as simple as “just say no”. When a person reaches this point with their drug misuse, it becomes an dependency and must be dealt with accordingly.
Realizing the implications of drug use and dependency can help keep people on track and away from coming to the point of addiction in their habit. It’s a lot easier to start looking for options for treatment when you know what it is you’re dealing with.
Whether it is you or a friend, or even a loved one that is abusing or addicted to drugs, seeking out a drug treatment program soon and getting them the help that they need will help to take away from the danger of the serious health implications that are involved with this behavior. Getting into a drug treatment program can have a profound affect on society as well as the person using the drugs. Giving these people the help they need and getting them off of drugs helps to improve the society as a whole as it makes people who were not functional members of society into people who can now get along in society and creates a more peaceful community.
In fact, drug misuse is the number one cause of preventable illness and death in the United States. No matter what drug you are talking about, be it heroin, meth, or any other narcotic drug, these things can cause irreparable damage to the human body. Use of these things is preventable and educating people is the first step in that.
Drug abuse and addiction are blights on society. Both dependency and drug misuse have been around forever, and they are likely to be around quite a lot longer, but understanding the difference between these two will allow you to see the signs in someone who is at risk and give you the chance to possibly get them on the road to healing.
