A Nursing Home Care For Seniors
“I’m not going anywhere.” A number of stressed-out caregivers hear this mantra quite often from their ailing mother or father. Despite difficulty walking, using the bathroom, eating and remembering to take medications, many stubborn seniors refuse to admit they need help. In the past, there would be family arguments as the children did their best to find quality care in a nursing home. However, a new industry has popped up to fill the care gap between family expectations and nursing/old age home delivery: the home care aide industry.
Home care for seniors is becoming increasingly more popular as families prefer to keep their loved ones in the comfort of their own homes as long as possible. Elderly caregiver Amanda Rowry works for home health care agency Addus in Peoria, Illinois. This 30-year-old is perpetually busy, but she admits, “It has given me the sense of fulfillment that I lacked.” Six days a week Amanda’s up and out the door at 7:30 a.m., driving 30 minutes to visit 86-year-old Clara Betts, who is diabetic, nearly blind, arthritic and wheelchair-bound. By 10 a.m., Amanda has finished two loads of laundry, cooked breakfast, washed dishes, made the bed, applied lotion to Clara’s skin, helped her dress, taken out the garbage and brought in the mail. By the end of the day, she’ll have been to three people’s homes. On her one day off, she cares for her boyfriend with cancer and rides with a women’s motorcycle club.
Today, care for the elderly is performed by all different people — spouses, adult children, nursing homes and home care workers like Amanda Rowry. A home health aide should not be confused with a certified nurse aide. For instance, an elderly caregiver cannot lift the client or administer medicine. They can, however, remind clients to take their medications, bathe them, cook, clean, wash for them, run errands, do the grocery shopping and run them to doctor’s appointments. For many senior citizens, assistance with this sort of work is enough to keep them in their own homes and out of expensive nursing/old age homes. These helpers may come from agencies or they may be hired directly as freelance workers under-the-table.
The current economy may actually drive up the number of people looking to get into home nurse services, however. Home care for seniors will likely increase greatly in the next decade, with more and more private firms sprouting up to fill the void. “I always said this was one thing I’d never do,” Amanda Rowry admits. “Honestly, I couldn’t see myself bathing another human being.” Yet her bills, her wants, her needs and economic hard times have her working 50 hours/week for seven different clients who need everything from just cleaning to home bathing and meal preparation. After several years on the job, she confesses, “It’s heart work. I guess it’s because I don’t have children but these past two and a half years have given me a sense of responsibility. Knowing they depend on me, and in a sense, me depending on them, has given me a sense of fulfillment I felt I lacked.”
