Make Sense Of Car Seat Safety For Your Baby
Parents go out of their way to choose the correct car seat for their baby. A lot of time and money is spent on giving their kid the most protection that they can. So how do you make sense of keeping your newborn safe?
First you have to be certain that your baby is in the fitting seat for their age and weight and that it is situated in the best position. Most infant seats can be used in the rear-facing position for children under one year of age who have not yet reached 20 pounds.
For babies that are younger and smaller there are infant only seats that are designed especially for them and are a inconceivably good choice for newborn babies. They offer a good fit and are conveniently small and portable. As with all childrens car seats these should only be used in the back seat and facing the rear.
As an option for those individuals who only want to look at buying one car seat for their baby that will allow them to use it through all stages of development, you should look at convertible car seats. Convertible seats are larger and heavier, so they can accommodate your baby for a longer period of time. As with regular infant car seats, these convertible car seats are still to be used in the rear facing position for any child under 20 pounds and under a year old. After your baby turns a year old and grows to be over 20 pounds you can turn the seat around and face it forward. Normally most convertible car seats will hold a child up to 40 pounds.
Whichever way you decide to go with your kid’s car seat, you need to make sure that you understand completely how to properly use it. Make sure to read the manufacturer’s instructions, as well as your vehicle owner’s manual. The only way that the seat will protect your kid is if the baby is buckled in correct and the seat is secured correctly in the car.
Harness straps seem to be an area of particular difficulty for parents. In order for your baby to be safe, the harness needs to be fitted snugly to your babies chest and in the appropriate slot position. The straps should be in the slots at or below your baby’s shoulders for most infant seats and at or above baby’s shoulders for more convertible seats. You shouldn’t have any questions at all in the harness strap and of the clip that holds the straps together requirements to be around the armpit level. You should always check the owner’s manual to confirm fitting placement.
The use of safety belts is also a problem area. Be sure the seat belt follows the proper path for the position of the seat and recline the seat at about a 45-degree angle, if possible. You could use a rolled up towel under the base in order to help secure the seat in the proper positioning. Tighten the seat belt, as needed, to ensure the restraint is secured to your vehicle. If your car has a latch system installed, then it is essential that you make use of it otherwise it does no good.
You also need to consider how old the seat is in and the condition that it is in. If you didn’t buy the seat brand-new, the label will tell you how old it’s. Don’t use a seat that is more than five years old or does not come with the manufacturer’s instructions.
